چکیده

We describe Tabla Gyan, a system capable of improvising tabla solo music, a sophisticated percussion tradition from North India. The system is based on a generative model of the qaida, a central form in tabla solo based on thematic variation. The system uses a recombinative process of variation generation, and filters the results according to rhythmic and timbral characteristics of each phrase. The sequences are used to generate audio in realtime using pre-recorded tabla samples. An evaluation of the system was conducted with seventy users, primarily experienced tabla performer and listeners. With respect to qualities such as musicality, novelty, adherence to stylistic norms, and technical ability, the computer-generated performances compared favorably with performances by a world-class tabla player.

Effects of air loading on the acoustics of an Indian musical drum.

The effects of air loading on the acoustical properties of tabla, an Indian musical drum, are investigated by idealizing it as a composite membrane backed by a rigid cylindrical cavity. The coupled boundary value problem for membrane vibration and acoustic pressure, assuming acoustic radiations to be the only source of dissipation, is solved using a Green's function method. It is shown that air...

Separation of Tabla from Singing Voice using Percussive Feature Detection

In many signal processing applications, different sources of sound are to be separated for further modifications. Here, a method for the separation of tabla sound from a mixer of vocal and tabla is presented. For this, the shorttime Fourier transform (STFT) of the mixed signal is taken. The log difference of each frequency component between consecutive frames in the magnitude spectra is obtaine...
